SR Architects secured planning approval for a new clinical and educational extension to be built on the rear of The Dental Implant Clinic in the Newbridge section of the World Heritage City of Bath. The current Clinic resides in Hyde Lodge, a late Victorian, detached former residence on one edge of a small commercial zone in this district of Bath. The owner of the Clinic, a well-regarded and innovative practitioner of dental implant techniques needed to expand his practice clinical spaces and also desired to create a new state-of-the-art training facility for his specialist dental students. The rear garden of the property afforded enough space to extend the facility area whilst still maintaining some of the garden for staff and patients alike.

SR Architects worked closely with the owner, his representative and the planners to develop an architectural expression of garden pavillions that spoke to the scale and form of the existing building and surrounding properties. Flat glazed and solid roof areas were employed to join the pavillions, thus allowing for the number of required spaces within but keeping the height of the new mass relatively low and respectful of the original residence.

A highly crisp, modern expression was developed for the interior to reflect the Clinic’s forward thinking approach to its clinical and training delivery. Daylight through the glazed roof over the new main corridor draws the eye through the building from the main entrance in the existing building through and out to the garden space at the rear. The exposed Bath stone spine wall along this corridor echoes the existing building materials whilst offering the user a richer visual and tactile experience of the interior. A slight reworking of the existing ground floor arrangement has also allowed for an expansion of staff and student amenity space.

Construction of the extension is currently on hold, but it is hoped to commence in the near future.
